By the old dockside crane.

Two networked Lawo mc²56 in Berlin's TV shipyard.

The historic dockside crane facilities, flanked by two stylish old buildings, form the centre of the TV shipyard in Berlin’s East Port. When viewed from the exterior, no one would expect that, in this listed environment, one would find an ultra-modern broadcast centre run by Shipyard TV (die fernsehwerft) and A-Medialynx GmbH. However, inside the new building are two brand new HD studios with 36 networked video and audio editing workspaces and a digital archive facility with a capacity of 4,700 Terabytes. Of course, for a project like this only a few digital consoles come into consideration – and here the choice was for two networked Lawo mc²56 consoles.

The two consoles are practically identical, each providing 48 faders in a 32-16-32 frame with 96 DSP channels. The router has a capacity of 8,000 crosspoints and, for the highest level of reliability, it includes a second, redundant router board. According to Markus Eicher, Shipyard TV’s Technical Director, “When it came to this project, there was no alternative to the products from Lawo”. The mc²56 was, in the end, selected, because “it offers maximum functionality in a compact control surface”. The Lawo Plugin Server for full integration of VST Plugins was another important factor in their decision.

A-Medialynx GmbH, founded in Berlin in February 2001 as an independent company, offers their customers professional solutions in the areas of TV production and post production. Currently, A-Medialynx GmbH runs two modern TV studios, plus twelve networked editing suites for video and audio post production, at their headquarters in Berlin’s East Port. With the provision of digital archiving of broadcast materials, and with a user-friendly content management system, A-Medialynx provides their customers with the facility to store their content safely, efficiently and long-term.

Die fernsehwerft (Shipyard TV) GmbH was newly founded by the spin-off of Broadcast and Satellite Services from A-Medialynx GmbH. At their headquarters at Berlin’s East Port, Shipyard TV provides a state-of-the-art playout centre, which currently supports ten TV stations. Shipyard TV’s satellite service offers national as well as international customers a wide range of portable and fixed-installation transmitting stations (HD-capable).
